September 23, 1122 - Concordant of Worms

The Concordant of Worms was held in Worms, Germany, where the Holy Roman Emperor Henry V acquiesced to Pope Callixtus II’s request to keep church and state separate. Many of the previous Holy Roman Emperors used their influence to choose bishops and determine how the church was run across the Empire. Pope Callixtus II pushed back when Henry V confiscated church lands and property until this agreement on September 23, 1122.
