December 24, 1784 - American Methodist Episcopal Church Formed

The Lovely Lane Meeting House in Baltimore, Maryland, was the site where the American Methodist Episcopal Church was formed on December 24, 1784. John Wesley disliked the idea of Americans creating their own church organizations, but the church ordained Francis Asbury as their first bishop despite this. The Methodist Episcopal Church would eventually become the United Methodist Church. Pictured is a plaque that is the last of the remnants of the meeting house location, but the Lovely Lane Chapel Methodist Church relocated into a beautiful building.
