November 2, 1637 - Anne Hutchinson Banished from Massachusetts
Despite their affinity for religious freedom, the pilgrims were not very tolerant toward dissent. Similar to Roger Williams, Anne Hutchinson was excommunicated from the Massachusetts Bay Colony after her trial on November 2, 1637. She was found guilty of “traducing” ministers because she held meetings in her home with women to discuss their opinions on sermons and Christianity. After her banishment, she founded a colony that would become part of Rhode Island.
