December 1, 1521 - Pope Leo X Dies

When Martin Luther nailed his 95 Thesis to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany in 1517, he revolutionized the way many people viewed the teachings of the Catholic Church. His ideas conflicted with the Catholic Church so much that many broke away from Catholicism entirely. As a result, Pope Leo X (who died on December 1, 1521) excommunicated Luther for his controversial beliefs.
