September 2, 1973 - J.R.R. Tolkien Dies
J.R.R. Tolkien, the author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings series, was a devout Catholic, and this influenced his novels. However, unlike his friend C.S. Lewis, Tolkien never explicitly stated the religious connection between his beliefs and his novels as can be seen in The Chronicles of Narnia series. He preferred to allow the reader to find the subtleties, such as Gandalf returning in all white at his “second coming.” Tolkien died on September 2, 1973.
