December 21, 1807 - John Newman Dies

Amazing Grace is likely the most famous hymn of all time. Its author, John Newman, converted to Christianity on a slave-trading ship, drastically altering the course of his life. He desired to become a priest in the Church of England, but he was rebuffed by the archbishop. However, Newman was persistent and was eventually granted a church in Olney, England. The church grew in popularity so quickly that it had to be expanded (pictured). He was a friend to the great George Whitefield and the renowned poet William Cowper. He worked closely with William Wilberforce to advocate for the outlawing of slavery in the British Empire. John Newman died on December 21, 1807.
