December 20, 1833 - Oxford Movement Continues to Grow
Because of growing concerns that the Church of England had grown too far removed from its liturgical roots, the Oxford Movement began. Initially sparked by Clergyman John Keble, this movement sought to restore High Church practices and Catholic doctrine within Anglicanism. This led to the rise of Anglo-Catholicism and increases in incense burning, vestments, and more elaborate liturgies within the Church. Keble College at Oxford University is named in his honor.
