April 6, 1593 - Henry Barrowe and John Greenwood Hanged

CHT

Many often forget that the Pilgrims who landed at Plymouth rick were fleeing persecution from the Church of England and not the Roman Catholic Church. Among the group of Puritans in England were Henry Barrowe and John Greenwood, who later became leaders in the Puritan movement. They argued with leaders in the Church of England that, after searching Scripture, they saw no basis for the creation of the Church at all, so claimed it should be abolished. Because of this assertion, Barrowe and Greenwood were hanged on April 6, 1593. Pictured are stained glass windows bearing their likeness in Emmanuel United Reformed Church at Cambridge.
