October 18, 1685 - Edict of Fontainebleau
When the Catholic King of France Henry IV issued the Edict of Nantes in April of 1585, the Roman Catholic Church was displeased because it granted many religious freedoms to Protestants. However, French Protestants, also known as Huguenots, did not enjoy these freedoms long. On October 18, 1685, Henry’s grandson King Louis XIV reversed the decision with the Edict of Fontainebleau.
