December 20, 1833 - The Oxford Movement Begins

Based on a concern the Church of England was moving too far away from its liturgical roots, Clergyman John Keble and others initiated the Oxford Movement on December 20, 1833, to bring back more High Church practices within Anglicanism. This led to the rise of Anglo-Catholicism and more uses of the burning of incense, vestments and more elaborate liturgies. Keble College at Oxford University is named in his honor.
