January 8, 1198 - Innocent III Elected Pope

Innocent III was elected Pope on January 8, 1198, and ushered in a renewed era of increased papal authority. This increased authority came in response to the Avignon papacy, when three different men claimed the papal title. He was also the first to be known as the Vicar of Christ.
