The story of St. Valentine has remained an enigma throughout history as there is not a clearly documented individual by that name. Instead, he seems to be the product  of medieval interpretation, later memory, and intersecting stories. Valentine differs from other historical figures like St. Patrick because he left no personal writings behind. Instead, there are only stories written centuries later in an attempt to explain the lives and deaths of early Christian martyrs. At least three different men named Valentinus were recorded as Chrisitan martyrs in the  late second or early third century, during the reign of Emperor Claudius Gothicus. One a Christian military leader, one a Roman priest, and one a Bishop from Terni, the latter two’s stories resemble so closely that historians debate whether or not the two are separate men or the same. Both, however, were remembered to be proselytizers, sharing the Gospel even though it was dangerous. These stories were written two or more centuries after these events took place, and none of the accounts recognized Valentine as an image of romance but as a healer. Valentine’s connection to romance emerged in the fourteenth century when Geoffrey Chaucer included St. Valentine’s feast day in a poem about birds choosing their mates at the start of spring. Over time, Valentine’s Day was transformed, almost entirely through literature, into the holiday it is now recognized as, celebrating love and marriage. It is important to remember though, that the original Valentine was not known for romance or matchmaking but for great faith, healing, and defiance in the face of persecution.
