September 13, 1635 - Roger Williams Banished from Massachusetts

Roger Williams, founder of the first Baptist Church in the colonies, was banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony on September 13, 1635. His primary offense was strong belief in the separation of church and state, which would later be implemented in the First Amendment to the Constitution 150 years later. Williams would go on to establish the colony of Rhode Island.
