January 1, 1511 - Pope Julius II Creates Holy League

Pope Julius II created the Holy League on January 1, 1511. This league was created to defend the Venetian States from France after a series of political alliances were formed to fortify the influence of the Papacy during the Italian Wars. The League instituted alliances with King Ferdinand of Spain and the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I.
