September 27, 1540 - Jesuits Officially Recognized

The Society of Jesus, better known as the Jesuits, was founded by Ignatius of Loyola in 1534. Pope Paul III officially recognized the order on September 27, 1540.  The Jesuits are composed of people from various races, cultures, and backgrounds but are united by three key vows: poverty, chastity, and obedience.
