December 11, 1792 - Joseph Mohr Pens “Silent Night”
“Silent Night” is often regarded as the most famous Christmas hymn ever written. It was written by Joseph Mohr who penned the words on December 11, 1792, in Salzburg, Austria. Pictured is the cathedral that he grew up attending. He endured a very difficult childhood because he was his mother’s third illegitimate child. Because of the shame this placed upon him, he was not accepted into any schools. However, he was a gifted singer, and the local priests heard him and allowed him to serve in the Church.
