October 21, 1555 - Queen “Bloody Mary” I Starts Campaign Against Protestantism
Queen Mary I of England was adamantly opposed to Protestantism, and she had Anglican bishops Hugh Latimer and Nicholas Ridley burned at the stake to emphasize that England would be returning to Catholicism. However, this only enraged the Protestants who vowed not to support the Catholic Church. On October 21, 1555, Mary began an anti-Protestantism campaign that resulted in the deaths of more than 280 people. Because of this, she garnered the nickname Bloody Mary.
