August 23, 1928 - Reverend R.K. Carter Dies

The author of the famous hymn “Standing on the Promise” was known by several names throughout his life (Dr. Russell Kelso Carter, Colonel Kelso Carter, and Reverend R.K Carter). Originally raised Presbyterian, he became a Methodist after he was influenced by a revival. He left his birthplace of Baltimore for California, divorced his wife, and began preaching. He was actually charged with one of the first cases of mail fraud after he tried to sell a machine called the “Electropoise” (pictured). By the time he died on August 23, 1928, the fame of his hymn far outweighed the bad reputation he had garnered from his earlier life decisions.
