On October 2, 1729, a dozen Baptist ministers met to form the Baptist Missionary Society for the Propagation of the Gospel Among the Heathen. Its first leader and missionary was William Carey. Pictured is the seal of the university named in his honor in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
