As Holland became a Protestant stronghold in the 15000s, it became resentful towards the rule of Catholic Spain. In order to gain independence, Holland declared war on Spain to gain independence. This began the Eighty Years War (1568-1648), both a political and religious conflict. Holland was one of Seventeen Provinces underneath Spanish control before Protestant Dutch provinces began resisting Spanish rule. Louis of Nassau was a prominent military commander in the beginning stages of the rebellion, and his brother, William of Orange, was the central figure of the Dutch independence movement. William later became the King of England with Mary II. On May 23, 1568, the Dutch rebels defeated the Spanish in the first battle of the war- the Battle of Heiligerlee. This was the first significant victory for the Dutch rebels, so it helped to boost their morale. Eventually, the war resulted in the independence of the Dutch Republic, which became known for religious tolerance and economic prosperity.

Reflecting on this part of history reminds Christians of the cost that many have paid for holding to their beliefs so that Christians today can have the freedom that they experience. It also serves as a reminder that divisions within Chrisitanity can lead to long-term conflict, reinforcing the value of unity. With this in mind, Christians can reflect on how to approach conflict within the church and how to approach conflict when it mixes with government authority. It is important to have already considered how to handle these situations so that the church is prepared when they may arise.
