July 23, 1391 - Ste. Bridget of Sweden Dies

Saint Bridget of Sweden died in Rome after years of traveling throughout Europe to encourage spiritual renewal within the Church. Born into a noble Swedish family around 1303, Bridget was married and the mother of eight children before becoming a widow and devoting the remainder of her life to prayer, charity, and religious reform. She founded the Bridgettine (Order of the Most Holy Savior) religious order, which established monasteries for both men and women under the leadership of an abbess—an unusual structure for the medieval Church.

Bridget became widely known for her reported visions and spiritual experiences, which she dictated to secretaries and later compiled into the Revelations (Revelationes). These writings emphasized Christ's suffering, called for repentance, and urged both political leaders and church officials to pursue holiness and justice. She was also an outspoken advocate for reform during the tumultuous years of the Avignon Papacy, repeatedly urging the pope to return the papal seat to Rome.

Bridget was canonized in 1391, less than twenty years after her death, and today remains one of the patron saints of Europe. While Protestants generally do not accept her private revelations as authoritative, many still recognize her remarkable devotion to Christ, commitment to prayer, and willingness to speak boldly to the powerful in defense of what she believed was biblical truth.

Bridget of Sweden reminds us that faithful Christians have often challenged both society and the Church to pursue greater holiness. Although believers differ over the authority of her reported visions, her life demonstrates the influence that conviction, courage, and steadfast faith can have even during periods of deep institutional turmoil. Her legacy illustrates how one committed believer can leave a lasting impact on Christian history through prayer, service, and a call to spiritual renewal.
