On July 24, 1874, Oswald Chambers was born in Aberdeen, Scotland. Today he is remembered as one of the most influential Christian devotional writers of the twentieth century, though he never lived to see the global impact of his work. Before entering ministry, Chambers studied art and wrestled for many years to discern God's calling on his life. His spiritual journey eventually led him to preach, teach, and establish a Bible training college in London dedicated to preparing men and women for Christian service.
When World War I broke out, Chambers volunteered as a YMCA chaplain to British and Commonwealth troops stationed in Zeitoun, Egypt. There he ministered tirelessly to thousands of soldiers through Bible studies, counseling, and evangelistic meetings. His demanding schedule often left him physically exhausted, yet he consistently placed the spiritual needs of others before his own.
In October 1917, Chambers suffered acute appendicitis. Rather than seeking immediate medical care, he reportedly delayed treatment so that hospital staff could continue caring for wounded soldiers. He eventually underwent emergency surgery but died from complications on November 15, 1917, at the age of 43. He was buried in Cairo's Old Protestant Cemetery.
Although Chambers wrote relatively little for publication during his lifetime, his wife, Biddy Chambers, faithfully transcribed his sermons and lectures in shorthand. After his death, she compiled and edited these notes into numerous books. The most famous, My Utmost for His Highest, was first published in 1924 and has become one of the best-selling Christian devotionals of all time, translated into dozens of languages and read by millions around the world.

Oswald Chambers reminds us that faithfulness is not measured by the length of one's life but by obedience to God's calling. His ministry to soldiers lasted only a few years, yet the devotional compiled from his teachings has encouraged Christians across generations to pursue wholehearted devotion to Christ.
