When Father Edward Flanagan was born in Ballymoe, Ireland, on July 13, 1886, few could have imagined the profound impact he would have on thousands of vulnerable children. In 1917, he founded Boys Town near Omaha, Nebraska, with the conviction that "there is no such thing as a bad boy." Today, Father Flanagan's legacy continues through the ongoing work of Boys Town, and the Roman Catholic Church has recognized his life of heroic virtue as he advances through the canonization process. He was declared "Venerable" by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012, an important step on the path toward sainthood.
