July 15, 1779 - Professor Clement Moore Born

Clement Moore was born on July 15, 1779, and lived a life full of several distinct accomplishments. He became a professor at the General Theological Seminary in New York City where he lectured on Greek and Oriental literature. He also wrote the Christmas poem “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas,” one of the most famous Christmas poems ever. Further, he lived in a large estate on the outskirts of Manhattan that originally belonged to his grandfather. He named the mansion Chelsea, and today the entire neighborhood on the West Side has been designated with the same name.
