July 7, 1873 - Lottie Moon Appointed Missionary to China
Lottie Moon is one of the pillars of the Southern Baptist denomination. Originally a school teacher, Lottie gave up her life of comfort and security to follow the call of the Great Commission. She was appointed a missionary to China on July 7, 1873, and she left the United States shortly after. She made an impact on the Chinese, especially the children, simply by being their friend before she attempted to evangelize to them. She often offered them tea cakes and became known to the Chinese community she served in as “The Cookie Lady.” She served in China for thirty-nine years, and her work was so impactful that the major Christmastime offering in Southern Baptist churches is named after her.
