July 9, 1228 - Archbishop Stephen Langton Dies

CHT

Archbishop of Canterbury Stephen Langton had a marked influence on modern study of Scripture: he is responsible for the insertion of chapter divisions into the Bible. While this certainly aided in study of the Bible as it allowed church members to reference specific passages of Scripture with ease, many disagree about some of the decisions he made. One of the most prominently contested is the end of Isaiah 52, which many believe should have been included with chapter 53 instead. He is also one of the signers of the infamous Magna Carta, aiming to limit the power of the king. He died on July 9, 1228.
